Talbina is a drink prescribed by the Prophet (PBUH) for depression and sadness.

• Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that whenever one of her relatives died, the women assembled and then dispersed (returned to their houses) except her relatives and close friends. She (may Allah be pleased with her) would order that a pot of Talbina be cooked. Then Tharid (a dish prepared from meat and bread) would be prepared and the Talbina would be poured over it. Aisha would say (to the women), “Eat of it, for I heard the Messenger (PBUH) saying, ‘The Talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves him from some of his sadness.‘[Bukhari& Muslim]

• It is narrated that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recommend Talbina and used to say, ‘It is disliked (by the patient) although it is beneficial. [Bukhari]

• Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, “If any of the Messenger’s (PBUH) family became ill, the Messenger would say: ‘It [Talbina] soothes the grieving heart and cleanses the ailing heart just as one of you cleans dirt off his face with water.’ [Tirmidhi &Ibn Majah]

Benefits of Talbina:

• The diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction and angina.

• It contains high ratios of chromium, which regulates the proportion of insulin in the blood, and this helps to reduce the feeling of hunger for a long time, which contributes to the loss of weight.

• It provides the body with the energy necessary to carry out daily activities.

• It contains B-glucan, a substance that activates red corpuscles, and lowers cholesterol level in blood because they contain high levels of dietary fibre.

• It protects against diabetes, regulates the level of insulin in blood, and maintains the stability of levels of sugar in blood.

• Fibre facilitates digestion, assists in the movement of the colon, which treats the problem of constipation, and reduces the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

• It contains high rates of potassium and magnesium, which help in the work of neurotransmitters, which makes Talbina as a treatment for depression and sadness, and therefore the Prophet (PBUH) described it to the people of the deceased.

• It delays ageing symptoms as wrinkles and loss of memory.

• It helps to purify the body constantly by the disposal of waste, and it protects the digestive system from constipation and bloating and gives a sense of lightness and satisfaction,

• It has significant benefits for the pregnant and it is a treatment of infertility.

• And many other benefits but suffice to say that you are taking a recipe described by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him

Preparation: Add a tablespoon of Talbina to a cup of milk and stir it well, then put it on low fire but do not let it boil.  Add honey if desired and the drink is ready. You can thicken Talbina by adding more Talbina powder in case you want to eat it by spoon.  

Note: Talbina can be cooked with water but it will not be as tasty as with milk.
